about

Hot on the heels of MFLAS 11 comes Volume 12. As has been the case in the past, this latest installment was inspired by a recent trip. This time the journey was much closer to home - specifically to the NC mountains at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Field recordings from the trip are featured in 3 of the 4 tracks. And the track titles are taken from trails, locations and a book started during the trip.

Deep Creek reflects the interest I had in minimalist classical music in the mid-90s. Arvo Pärt is the reference point here. This track is very sparse but melancholic and emotional all the same. The field recording includes a stream from the trail with planes passing overhead periodically. It’s a little sad that solitude is so hard to find these days, so this track reflects that reality.

Hypnopaedia is the outlier from the other tracks – i.e., weirder and a little more challenging. I have been reading some dystopian novels as of late and finished George Orwell’s Animal Farm during the trip. On a whim, I grabbed Brave New World and started reading it at once. The conditioning of infants/young children with messages while sleeping was particularly fascinating to me. This track was inspired by that aspect from the 92-year-old novel.

Tunnel Bypass returns to calmer and more meditative territory. The Tunnel Bypass Trail features the 1200 foot “Road to Nowhere” tunnel. This tunnel was built for a scenic drive that was never completed. This is where I recorded the field recording returning to the car. As luck would have it, a group of horse riders appeared at the other end when I was about halfway through the tunnel. It sounded rather interesting with all of that natural reverb. And yes, that’s me conversing with some of the riders at the end of the tunnel and track. 😊

Fontana Lake rounds out the tracks with a lakeside field recording. This recording is from a hike on the last day of the trip. This track reflects the melancholy of the much-needed time away from work/home coming to an end.

As always, thank you for listening and your support.
